Meet MomLikeThat - Janelle Sellick

This week I'm honored to feature my long time friend Janelle. We met eight years ago through our local mom's club. I remember taking my newborn to our first playgroup (which was probably one of the craziest play dates ever!) and I see a very pregnant Janelle sitting in the middle of the chaos and calmly feeding her twin girls while chatting with everyone with a big, infectious smile. No matter the situation Janelle exudes zen, while always making you feel welcome and connected. Eight years later Janelle has four girls, a dog, rescues cats, is an author, a wife, a marathoner, and wears many hats for the community. And through all that she is still the same infectious, wonderful Janelle I met on that first play date.

How would you describe yourself?

Diligent, Friendly, Dreamer

What do you do besides motherhood?

Motherhood is definitely my main job (and a half!) but I write curriculum and teach classes for older adults that are experiencing memory loss and help businesses develop specialized early memory loss programs. I also have also authored or co-authored six books on the subject of early memory loss, brain fitness, or caregiving and am most proud of co-founding the Brain Boosters Model program.

In the community, I am the President of the American Canyon Community and Parks Foundation, President of the AHI Swim Team, and Chair of the Parks and Community Services Commission for the City of American Canyon.  I also try to keep up with the kids activities by helping in the classroom or being Team Mom for their different sports teams.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Work and hard and be kind. I can’t remember where I first heard it, but over the years it has become my mantra.

What’s your beauty routine?

Hmm, this area is a work in progress, I need all the help I can get! I try to get some bronzer and mascara on most mornings, but I’m always looking for a great new product. I love my Burt’s Bees lip gloss though, it’s the best!

What’s your signature scent?

I don’t usually wear perfume, but occasionally I’ll wear Dream from Gap.

What can’t you live without?

Family first, then getting together for weekend runs with our local running group RunMomsRun.

How do you balance your life?

By getting outside.  Every couple of days I need to get out to our local open space trails for a hike or run. It’s my favorite way to relax and reset.

Who is your biggest role model?

There’s something about Tina Fey that I just love. Her take on work, motherhood, and life is both relatable and hilarious at the same time.

Do you have a family tradition?

Summer camping trips and game nights with the family. Our Chinese Checkers games can go on for hours (and sometimes I actually win, ha ha!)

What makes a mom like that?

Moms lifting up other Moms. Getting through this motherhood thing isn’t always easy, so we’ve got to encourage, support, and love our fellow moms!

Farm to Table - Napa Grass Farmer

There's a lot of talk about farm to table, but we have mostly dined at restaurants that preached it. Now we're trying it at home by signing up with Napa Grass Farmer, which offers a bounty of local, organic, and humanely raised meat. We signed up for a monthly pork delivery, but they also have chicken, lamb, buffalo and turkey. I cooked the bacon first and you know it's good when your kids devour it within seconds. Next I'm going to make their pork chops for dinner so stay tuned for that. We also love our local fruit and vegetable stand for our produce. Don't these peaches and plums look amazing? They are soooo good! I'm a truly believer that kids eat more when they eat fresh and simple dishes.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

The Easy Way to Fresh, Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream

Last Sunday I got carried away at our local fruit and vegetable stand and bought way too many strawberries. I froze some for smoothies and made this yummy ice cream with the rest. I used coconut cream, but you can replace it with regular heavy cream.

Ingredients:

1 lb of strawberries, trimmed and halved if large

1 can of coconut cream or 2 cups of heavy cream

3/4 of sugar

Equipment - Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

Mash strawberries with sugar then add the cream. Pour mixture into the ice cream maker and run for 20-25 minutes. Transfer the mixture into an air tight container and freeze overnight.

Enjoy!

Oro Epic Road Trip Part Three: Lakeshore Lodge in Sandpoint

I apologize for the lack of post in the last few weeks. If you follow me on Instagram you know that I’ve been on an epic road trip with my family and traveling through America's forested Northwest to the desert Southwest. I’m very sad that it had come to an end, but very happy to be home and reunited with my shower, bed and closet.

In the next few weeks I’ll post many of the photos and places we’ve been. I’ve already shared our adventure from California, Oregon, and Washington. Today I’m sharing one of my favorite places of our epic road trip – Sandpoint, Idaho. We spent nine days at a wonderful vacation rental home known as Lakeshore Lodge in Dover, the town immediately next to Sandpoint. Our friends Scott and Nori own this beautiful property. They were so kind to share their beautiful lake home with my family. And Scott’s parents made us homemade - huckleberry pancakes!

We had so much fun and my kids are already making plans to go back next summer. Here are some of the photos of Lakeshore Lodge and the lake.

To be continued….

Oro Epic Road Trip Part Two - Spokane, WA

We stopped at Picabu Bistro in Spokane for a quick lunch. We found this place via Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I was very impressed with their menu selection. We had Cajun shrimp tacos, Cajun shrimp salad (the bomb), and the kids had child-sized deep dish cheese pizza. Everything was delish!

After lunch we stopped at a super cute neighborhood ice cream shop. If you've never tried bubble gum flavored ice cream, try it here. It's the best I've ever had. They also serve sandwiches on their homemade waffles. The staff and the owner are super friendly and you know they put a lot of love in their work. We love finding local gems like The Scoop. It makes you want to come back for more! If you don't believe me, believe Alton Brown.

Meet MomLikeThat - Amy Payton

Amy is one cool mama! Not only is she very successful in what’s she is doing, but she is also the sweetest person. She is someone that you can always count on! I’m so glad I’ve had the chance to get to know her.

How would you describe yourself?

Tenacious, curious, silly

What do you do besides motherhood?

I am wife to my love, James Payton, who is the Lead Pastor at Crossroads Multinational church. I’m also a Senior Director with Thirty-One Gifts. I’ve been with Thirty-One for almost 4 years (my anniversary is June 27th) and I.LOVE.IT!

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Well…it wasn’t really direct advice, but there were a few women I really admired, and realized that they had a gift of making people feel noticed and special—they LISTENED and were curious about others! It’s something I’ve had to work at—I more naturally talk—but I’ve tried to instill that in relationships and in my business!

What’s your beauty routine?

So last summer, I started an experiment making my own toiletries and skin care….and I’ve never turned back. I wash my face with castor oil, use coconut oil and argan oil with essential oils as moisturizer, coconut oil/lavender essential oil/baking soda as deodorant, corn starch as loose-face powder and I make my own toothpaste. I tried the “no poo” thing for my hair….that wasn’t my best experiment!

What’s your signature scent?

Honestly, I don’t care for perfume—most of it gives me a headache! I use Arbonne Shea Butter shower gel (my natural versions clogged the shower drain) and I love that scent, and I LOVE the smell of lavender essential oil! I’m also a sucker for coconutty/Hawaiian-y smells!

What can’t you live without?

If everything else was gone, if I could rest my head on James’ chest and kiss the top of my kids’ heads, all would be well! But besides that—my ocean waves white noise machine and shoes.  I may or may not have too many of the latter….flip flops, stilettos, wedges, flats, boots…I heart them all except ugly, practical, comfortable ones. Why can’t I love the comfortable ones?!?!

How do you balance your life?

I like to think about things in harmony. My faith/hubby/family come first, but there may be a small season where a business or extended family thing tends to overshadow. But, I try to balance that with down time with my lovies immediately afterwards! We can drive ourselves nuts trying to achieve balance all the time—it’s more of a macro than micro thing.

Who is your biggest role model?

My Mom. I don’t think I realized what a great mom she was till I was one myself and knew how hard it was. My dad worked nights most of my younger years, so she was like a single mom to FOUR kids…and she ROCKED IT!!! And now she’s an amazing grandma—love her!

Do you have a family tradition?

We do a family prayer/song time each night with our kiddos…I love that time to calm down, debrief from the day and connect. We also love doing the question game at dinner where each person thinks of an open-ended question that everyone else has to answer. My kids love it and it opens up lots of fun conversations that wouldn’t normally happen!

What makes a MomLikeThat?

Be yourself, Mama. There is so much pressure today on Mom’s to be perfect….it’s just not true, no matter how amazing their Pinterest board is! There’s a reason why God gave my kids to me—they need me and the way I parent. That relieves a lot of pressure!

5 quick questions:

Favorite restaurant: With kids Lazy Dog/without kids Ruth’s Chris or Dukes

Favorite recipe: TO.DIE.FOR! Chocolate cupcakes and the best buttercream frosting EVAH!!

Favorite dessert: Dark chocolate covered strawberries….or this yummy Pavlova dessert my mom makes….now I’m hungry….

Slowing Down This Summer and a Few Essentials

I'm excited that my kids are out of school next week. This summer we plan to slow down (no camps, no schedules, no hurry ups, no come on.. let's go...) and spend some quality time with the family. As parents we forget sometimes to slow down and just simply enjoy our kids even as simple as watching them play with dirt in the backyard.

Here is a great post on trying out slow parenting. What are your plans for this summer?

A Little Gem On The California Coast - Cambria

Last weekend my mommy besties and I drove to Cambria for a girl’s weekend. We started with a walk by the ocean. The smell of the coast was so clean and refreshing. I immediately felt recharged! After our morning walk we got all dressed up and headed to local wineries for some vino. We also sampled some of the most amazing wood fire pizza which was perfectly paired with Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. We ended the first night with girl talk and indulged ourselves with lots of chocolate and ice cream.

The next morning we had breakfast at Lynn’s. Their Olallieberry scone was out of this world! I also brought home their famous Olallieberry jam. It’s incredible with toast or English muffin. We then went to town and did a little shopping and visited a several charming gardens. And we had to stop and say hi to all the elephant seals molting. It was a quiet scene, and smelly too!

Cambria is definitely a California coastal gem. Thank you Kristyn for showing us this beautiful place where she spent most of her childhood summer breaks.

Heading for wine tasting

First stop J Dusi Wines

Second stop Opolo Vineyards

Last stop Rotta Winery

Amazing wood oven pizza!

Cheers to a girl's weekend and great wine!

Relaxing in a super cute garden at the back of a local shop.

According to my daughter, this Olallieberry is the best jam ever…. And I agree with her!

Elephant seals endure what's called a "catastrophic molt" meaning they shed all their fur over the course of several weeks. The seals molt once a year between April to August. Gender and age determine when they molt.
